Heading to Mexico? How Far in Advance Should You Book Your Golf?
You've booked your flights. Your hotel is confirmed. Now what about your golf?
One of the most common mistakes golfers make when traveling to Mexico is waiting until they arrive to start looking for tee times.
If playing golf is an important part of your vacation, our advice is simple:
Book your golf before you leave home.
At Golf Mexico Tee Times, we've been helping golfers arrange tee times in Mexico for more than 15 years. Here's what you should know about when to book.
How Far Ahead Should You Book Mexico Golf?
There isn't one answer for every course or destination, but as a general guide:
- Peak winter season: Start looking 30–60 days ahead.
- Christmas, New Year's and major holiday periods: Book as early as possible.
- Spring and fall: 2–4 weeks ahead is a good target for many courses.
- Summer: There is often more availability, but morning tee times can still be important because of the heat.
If you need a specific course, specific day or specific morning tee time, don't wait until the last minute.
Winter Is Mexico's Prime Golf Season
There's a reason so many golfers head south during winter.
While much of the United States and Canada is dealing with cold temperatures, snow and closed golf courses, destinations such as Los Cabos, Puerto Vallarta and Cancún/Riviera Maya offer warm weather and outstanding golf.
That also means you're not the only golfer thinking about escaping winter.
From roughly December through March, demand for desirable tee times can be much stronger, particularly during holidays and popular travel weeks.
Morning Tee Times Usually Go First
For many visiting golfers, the ideal vacation tee time is in the morning.
You can play your round before the hottest part of the day and still have the afternoon available for the beach, pool, sightseeing or spending time with your family.
That's exactly why desirable morning tee times can be among the first to become limited.
If you know you want to play at 8:00 or 9:00 in the morning rather than later in the day, book earlier.
Planning Several Rounds? Book Them Together
If you're coming to Mexico specifically for a golf trip, don't book one course and assume you'll figure out the rest after you arrive.
Start with the courses you most want to play and build your golf schedule around them.
For example, a golfer visiting Puerto Vallarta might want to play Vidanta, Vista Vallarta, El Tigre and Marina Vallarta.
In Los Cabos, you may want several different courses during the same trip.
The more golf you plan to play, the more important it becomes to organize those tee times in advance.
Cabo Golf – Book Early
Los Cabos has become one of the premier golf destinations in North America.
Desert terrain, mountains and dramatic oceanfront holes have attracted some of the biggest names in golf course architecture.
If Cabo golf is an important part of your vacation — particularly during winter — we recommend making your golf reservations while you're planning the rest of your trip.
Puerto Vallarta & Riviera Nayarit
Puerto Vallarta and Riviera Nayarit offer a very different golf experience.
Here you'll find the Pacific Ocean, tropical vegetation, mountain scenery and courses from designers including Jack Nicklaus, Greg Norman and Tom Weiskopf.
Golfers can choose from courses including Vidanta, Vista Vallarta, El Tigre, Marina Vallarta and Flamingos.
If you're traveling during peak winter months, reserving your preferred courses before you arrive gives you a much better chance of building the golf schedule you actually want.
Cancún & Riviera Maya Golf
Golfers heading to Cancún and Riviera Maya also have plenty of options.
This region combines Caribbean beaches and resort vacations with excellent golf, making it easy to add one or two rounds to a family or couples trip.
If you're staying at a resort, don't assume the golf course will automatically have the tee time you want once you arrive.
Plan ahead, particularly if you want morning golf.
Should You Wait for a Last-Minute Deal?
Sometimes golfers wait because they think they'll find a better price after arriving.
That can backfire.
You may find availability somewhere, but it might not be the course, day or time you actually wanted.
If golf is simply an optional activity on your vacation, waiting may be fine.
But if there are courses you genuinely want to play, secure those tee times before your trip.
Do You Need to Pay in Pesos?
No.

So, When Should You Book?
If golf matters to your vacation, don't wait until you're sitting beside the pool in Mexico to start looking for a tee time.
During peak winter season, start planning your golf 30–60 days before your trip. For major holidays or if there's a particular course and tee time you want, start even earlier.
For quieter travel periods, you may have more flexibility — but there's still an advantage to getting your golf organized before you travel.
Book early. Get the courses and times you want. Then arrive in Mexico with one less thing to worry about.
